Pharmacy Residency Program

Health-System Pharmacy Administration (HSPA) residents have the opportunity to gain experience and develop expertise in the provision of comprehensive pharmacy services including direct patient care services, leadership/administrative responsibilities, pharmacy operations, medication safety, quality improvement and scholarly endeavors. As part of the nation’s largest health-system, HSPA residents will also learn about health-system pharmacy leadership on a larger scale. Mission Health is a member of the HCA Healthcare, a 185-hospital health-system. During this year, residents develop expertise in departmental leadership and administration, quality improvement and patient safety, policy development, interdepartmental relationships and collaboration, human resource management and current trends in the pharmacy profession. The second year will primarily focus on leadership and administrative skills. Health-system pharmacy leadership at a local hospital level, local system level (western NC), and national system level (HCA Healthcare) will also be offered throughout the second year.

Candidates accepted into the two-year Mission Hospital Pharmacy Administrative Residency are graduate students simultaneously enrolled in the Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences with specialization in Health-System Pharmacy Program at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. The Master of Science program is administered through the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

History and Goals

The Master of Science was offered previously at the University of North Carolina from 1969 to 1996. UNC began offering the master’s degree again in 2008, and has been proudly offered at Mission Hospital since July 2011. Mission Hospital residents have the unique opportunity to represent the large community hospital perspective within the UNC cohort. As part of Mission Health, the HSPA residents can also share the rural health and critical access hospital point of view.

HSPA residents from Mission Hospital will experience both the focus on population health associated with nonprofit community hospitals as well as the operational and clinical experiences associated with a large teaching hospital.

Mission Hospital HSPA residents will understand the continuum of care due to the strong relationship between the acute care and ambulatory care services. Learning experiences will primarily take place in the acute care setting with exposure to ambulatory care settings. Mission Hospital’s rich history in ambulatory care services provides opportunity for leadership training in these areas.
