Learning Experiences

HSPA residency program includes the following core training components:

Leadership/Administrative Experience – The majority of the second year is dedicated to experiential learning and practical application of knowledge and experiences from the first year. During this year, residents develop expertise in departmental leadership and administration, quality improvement and patient safety, automation and informatics as it applies to pharmacy services, policy development, interdepartmental relationships and collaboration, human resource management and current trends in the pharmacy profession. Additional experiences may be offered related to the resident’s interest.

Outpatient Clinical Pharmacy Management Outpatient Infusion Center Management
Retail Pharmacy Services Critical Access Hospital Management

Longitudinal Rotations

Staffing (requirements below) Research Project

Additional Requirements

Staffing

  • Every 4th weekend and one evening shift every other week

 Research Project

  • Medication Utilization Evaluation or research project
  • Poster presentation at ASHP Midyear; project presentation at Southeastern Residency Conference (SERC)

 Administrative Responsibilities

  • Administrative Manager On-Call – every 4th week (coincides with weekend staffing responsibility)
  • Manage a group of pharmacists and technicians
  • Manage the pharmacist work schedule
  • Chair of shared governance committee; chair of system operations committee

Professional Organization Meetings

  • ASHP Leadership Conference (October)
  • ASHP Midyear Conference

Pharmacist continuing education presentations

ACLS Training/Code Blue emergency participation

ABCCM volunteer experience – (as available)
