Mission has a variety of volunteer positions with flexible hours to suit a range of skills and talents.

The following sample list includes patient-related and non-patient-related placement areas:

Pet Therapy Volunteer Opportunities: Mission Hospital is seeking volunteers to create an exceptional experience for patients, visitors and staff by offering weekly visits with Pet Therapy registered dogs. Pet Therapy visits may occur in lobbies, waiting rooms or at the patient’s bedside. Successful Pet Therapy human volunteers will have excellent customer service skills, exhibit a caring and compassionate demeanor, and be able to appropriately respond to rapidly changing conditions. Successful Pet Therapy canine volunteers must be obedient, respond well to strangers and unfamiliar surroundings, and be in good health. Pet Therapy Dog Handler Team Volunteers (handler and dog) must be registered through either Pet Partners or Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Pet Therapy “Leashless” volunteers are also needed. Leashless volunteers facilitate Pet Therapy visits, but do not bring a dog. Mission Hospital requires that all volunteers complete an application, criminal background check, vaccine questionnaire and an orientation session prior to starting. We are seeking volunteers who are dependable and who can commit to a minimum of four months or 70 hours of service.

Guest Services Volunteer Opportunities: Mission Hospital is seeking volunteers to provide both patient and visitors with an exceptional service experience. Volunteers can participate in guest services in a variety of departments to include: Mission’s Rathbun House, Guest Services Desks, Registration and Waiting Areas. Successful guest service volunteers will have excellent customer service skills, a friendly, approachable demeanor and a desire to actively help our patients and visitors. Guest Service volunteers will provide information, directions, escort and support to our customers. Basic telephone and computer skills are required for most roles. Shifts vary depending on location, but typically volunteers serve a four-hour shift, once per week. Mission Hospital requires that all volunteers complete an application, criminal background check, vaccine questionnaire and an orientation session prior to starting. We are seeking volunteers who are dependable and who can commit to a minimum of four months or 70 hours of service.

Patient Service Volunteer Opportunities: Mission Hospital is seeking volunteers to provide patients and their families with compassionate support in clinical settings. Volunteers may serve in high-impact roles that have direct patient contact in departments such as Perianesthesia, the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units, Patient Discharge Escort and the Volunteer Station. Volunteer duties may include patient comfort tasks such as providing a warm blanket, providing snacks under the direction of nursing staff, escorting patients to their car or other destinations, and interacting with patients and families to ensure an exceptional patient experience. Operational tasks may include cleaning equipment (wiping down wheelchairs, stretchers, etc.), helping with room preparation, stocking supplies, obtaining/returning equipment, running errands and helping with light clerical duties. Successful patient service volunteers must have excellent customer service skills, exhibit a compassionate and caring demeanor, and be able to multitask in a fast-paced changing environment. Volunteers should be able to push a wheelchair, walk for some distance, be able to stand for extended periods of time and do some light lifting, bending and stooping. Some accommodations may be made for physical limitations dependent on the particular unit needs. Shifts vary depending on the department with general availability from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Volunteer opportunities to serve our pediatric and infant patients are available on a limited basis. These roles are very popular and available shifts may be filled quickly. Off Campus Support Volunteer Opportunities: Mission Hospital is seeking volunteers to offer exceptional service to patients, visitors and staff in a variety of departments located away from the main inpatient campuses. Off Campus Volunteers may serve at the SECU Cancer Center, Mission Rathbun House, My Care Plus Practices, Mission Sleep Center, Asheville Surgery Center, Materials Management, Production Pharmacy and other locations. Volunteer roles in these off campus locations may include clerical work, supply preparation for distribution, customer service in patient reception areas and patient contact roles. Mission Hospital requires that all volunteers complete an application, criminal background check, vaccine questionnaire and an orientation session prior to starting. We are seeking volunteers who are dependable and who can commit to a minimum of four months or 70 hours of service.

Mission Rathbun House Volunteer Opportunities: Mission Rathbun House is a home away from home that provides lodging, at no cost to families, during a loved one’s medical crisis. The house has a total of 36 guest rooms with each able to accommodate up to four guests. Volunteers are needed at Rathbun to provide excellent service to our guests by assisting them at check-in/out, offering tours of the house, checking vacated rooms for cleanliness, answering questions about local resources and offering care and compassion to patient families. Successful volunteers should have great customer service, telephone and computer skills and be willing to quickly respond to changing situations. Volunteers serve four hour shifts, 9am -1pm, 1pm-5pm and 5pm-9pm seven days per week.

Retail/Fundraising Support: Mission Hospital seeks volunteers to support retail fundraising operations at the Gift Shops on the Memorial Campus, St. Joseph Campus and Cancer Center. Gift Shop volunteers offer exceptional service to Mission patients, families and staff by operating the Point-of-Sale System, pricing items, putting away new stocks, maintaining the cleanliness and visual appeal of the shop and assisting customers with their shopping experience. These volunteers must enjoy working with the public, have excellent customer service skills, be friendly and outgoing, be able to handle money with accuracy, be able to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment. Cash register experience is helpful, but not required, however an aptitude for operating business machinery is necessary. Volunteers will need to be able to stand for extended periods of time, have good mobility and do light lifting. Shifts vary with availability from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. All profits from the Gift Shop operations fund unbudgeted needs of the hospital.
